Ok, so we all know that the primary (and sometimes the only) language of the Elves in Middle-Earth at the time of LOTR was Sindarin or Grey-Elvish. And we all know that after the War of the Ring, the last Elves left the shores of Middle-Earth to return to Valinor. Now, as I was pondering this, a question rose in my mind; if the primary language of the Elves in Valinor was Quenya (and may still be at the time of LOTR, for all we know), and the Elves coming back from Middle-Earth only knew Sindarin, what do you think would happen? Would they learn Quenya once again to "fit in" with the Elves in Valinor, or would the Elves in Valinor learn Sindarin? Or, stranger yet, would the presence of two languages create a new language? What are all your thoughts on the matter?

Quenya was kept as a language of lore. I would think all or most Elves would speak it. They were known for their mastery of languages.

Actually, I thought it was that Quenya was kept as a written language, but not many Elves spoke it since it had been "banned" after the Kinslaying of the Noldor... or am I mistaken?

It was banned fora time, but four ages can change a lot. Any elf who had thought of crossing the seaould have to be sure he could communicate. Why any would want across the sea is the puzzle!

Very interesting point! Although, I seem to remember Lord Elrond saying something about "the time of the Elves were passing, and the reign of Men was beginning" or something to that effect... They might have been being "called" back by the Valar... *suddenly envisions the Elves getting messages from the Valar on their pagers...*

True. But not all went. A lot stayed behind

Hmmm, I never knew that bit about Quenya. I always just thought that some elves spoke Quenya, while others just spoke Sindarin. Now I've learned something new about languages today!
