"They spoke of many things, old and new, and Frodo questioned Gildor much about happenings in the wide world outside the Shire. The tidings were mostly sad and ominous: of gathering darkenss, the wars of Men, and the flight of the Elves."I really love this chapter... especially the section with Pippin, Sam, and Frodo travelling together. And then meeting the Elves with Gildor, singing the song to Elbereth... it really is a wonderful section. I always imagine Gildor's speaking voice as sort of soft and a little sad. Is it ok if I just go ahead and post? I love the way the mood changes in this chapter: First, before Gandalf leaves, there's the same sort of uneasiness as in the previous chapter; it gradually dissolves, though, as soon as Frodo, Sam and Pippin start walking, and then suddenly it snaps back with the sound of hooves on the road...and I don't suppose it ever leaves until the very end of RotK...even when they meet Gildor, there's still this sense that peril is now both before you and behind you, and upon either side; and that even Gildor's company can only protect them for a little while. I'm always heart-broken when the elves have to leave them so quickly again...I could read about them for ever... Also, Gildor's line: Courage is found in unlikely places-- in a way, it sums up one of the main themes in LotR (and the Hobbit, as well), doesn't it? I thought Pippins reaction to the elves was kinda strange, though: The way he addresses them as "oh Wise People" and "Oh Fair Folk" -- to me it sounds unusually pompous for him...what's he trying to prove to them? Frodo seems a lot more at ease with them, and Sam's just completely in awe...(I like the innocent little Sam that left the Shire a lot better than later on in TTT and RotK...but he's so adorable in the first few chapters ) I'm not quite sure what to think about the elves being 'nasty' (you know, the and hobbits are so dull bit)to the hobbits when they first meet...I suppose it does depend a lot on how it is said...and (being the elf-obsessed Galadriel-Fangirl I am ) I refuse to think Gildor'd be mean to anybody (except to orcs and stuff, that is)... Oh, I almost forgot -- I looove that picture, it captures the mood perfectly, and it's just so beautiful, as well ;D (stupid aside question: What's the difference between this and that ;D one? I mean, I can see one is yellow and one is blue... )

That picture is great! I really like the songs in this chapter. I like it when Frodo sings "the road goes ever on" again, it really fits the situation. And the walking song of the Hobbits... Now that I know that it is the same song as Pippin sings in ROTK, I can imagion the melody. And later the Elves come, and they sing a very different song... Untill now, we only know Hobbit songs, and the Elven song has a very different feeling, it's hard to explain. I think it shows that the journey really started by now. I know what you mean, Linwen, about Gildor being rude towards the Hobbits. I didn't think it was a very Elvish thing to do. I thought it was strange. But the Hobbits were very astonished by the Elves, and maybe Gildor wanted to show the Hobbits that they are not THAT strange. But that doesn't really seems like the Elves to me.

That picture is wonderful! I've seen it around lots, and I love it: Alan Lee is a genius. As for the smilies - The yellow one came with Proboards, has a bit of a weird smiley code that I'd never remember and is hard to get rid of without replacing it with a transparent image, which I've done a bit too often with these

Oh yes, this is indeed one of my fav chapters in FOTR! I particularly love Tolkien's description of the interactions with the Elves... and Gildor's quote: "...It is fair to hear words of the Ancient Speech from the lips of other wanderers in the world." Good stuff. And there is a lot of foreshadowing too--gotta love those hints about what's to come...

In a sense it seems that this chapter marks the actual beginning of the journey. I enjoy how the Hobbits all interact with one another, too. You also can't beat the advice that Gildor passes on to the Hobbits (Frodo) at the end of chapter. I didn't think the Elves were rude at all, but merely kidding with Frodo. I think too, that Pippin addressing the Elves in this way was in part due to his nervousness about the Black Riders, and his sincere belief that they were indeed Wise People and Fair Folk. I think he is relieved when his questioning them on the Black Riders and informing the Elves of the presence of the same leads to their decision to abide with them for the night. I absolutely love the picture!
