I think this is the creepiest part of the whole story. It would have made for some really intense scenes if it had made it into the movie. Hope to comment more later, but I'm about to head for bed.

A great chapter, I think it's my favourite chapter from FOTR! It's so creepy... Tolkien has a great way to describe the atmosphere. I also like that poem, and I'm glad that it made it's way to the movie (Gollum quotes it at the Dead Marches). This chapter also proves the power of Tom Bombadil. He must be a very mighty person. He just tells the Barrow wight to go away, and he really goes away! When the Hobbits leave Tom Bombadil, you just know that their journey will get very dangerous again, now that Tom can't help them anymore. There was one thing I was wondering about: what ould have happened if Tom wasn't there, and the Hobbits couldn't have been saved? What would have happened with the Ring?

That's an interesting thought, Marieke. My guess is it would have ended up in Sauron's hands.
I too greatly enjoyed this chapter, as well as the poem. The title of it adds so much, as well. It's just so dark...I don't know.
