I personally think no... I can't see Ian picking up the role again. He looked great for the few minutes we see him on screen in FOTR with his face taped back, but I don't think that it would be believable for the entire movie. After all, he is over 70, and Bilbo is the same age as Frodo was in LOTR. I think it would be nice to start with Ian as Bilbo, maybe doing a voice-over and writing his book, but transition to another actor with the rest of the movie playing as a flashback. What do you guys think?

I had thought exactly the same thing as you, Elessar!! I think he's too old to do that...

Aw, I hope he does. he was perfect as Bilbo!!! But if not, who do you think they'd cast? Or do you think they'd cast someone who nobody knows?

I agree with Elessar and Hathawyn; I think he's (Ian) perfect as the older Bilbo, but with the age difference between Bilbo in LOTR and Bilbo in the Hobbit, they need someone younger.
However, with the things they can do with movie-makeup and such... *shrugs*

So I did some more browsing of the topics here and found this one. The really funny thing about this topic is that my sons and I were just talking about this very thing. We all had different opinions, though we are shared a common sketpicism over the age thing.

It's impossible if you ask me... he will look old whatever happens... he is said to have looked 50 when he was 90 not 90 when he was 50. if they want to stick to the cast, better use EW, they are said to look a lot alike anyway

I've no idea who he is!
Anyway, although Ian might be a bit old to play Bilbo, I just think it would be so sad if they had to get someone else to play him - it would work so brilliantly if he did, and if they have to get someone else, it just won't feel the same. But I do think it would be tricky to get him to look young.
