We all know a lot of the actors took the use of their weapons seriously. What i want to know is, How do you think this effected the film? Who did the best job? What kind of weapon would you train to use if you could? and anything along those lines

I think the film was better because the actors did not need the help of a double, and the action looks more real. I think the best job was for Legolas and Aragorn. I would train with Bow and Arrows and Sword, of course!

arggh! You're going to end up gagging me on this subject. I do karate and I could go on about things like this for hours! Ok, Legoals's fighting style first. His style is probably closest to how my style of karate works, I love the way he moves, he's so fluent and gracefull it looks like he's dancing. I also like his innovation, when he's fighting at amon hen and he stikes his arrow through that orc's face? Thats sheer genious! Gimli- Gimli is a great little fighter. His style of fighting's pretty much if it moves kill it, but it's probably a lot more practacal for brawls like some of the fighting at helms deep. Unlike legolas who's mores are more rehearsed (apart from that amazing bit at amon hen) Gimli seems to fight in the spur of the moment, which is good as he can react quickly to things. His height can be a bit of an advantage, it means when he's fighting he can get to places elves just couldn't hit. Aragorn- Aragorn's fighting style is so so. Sure he's good with a sword and he gets the job done but he doesn't have gimli's enegry or leoglas's finesse. He has strength on his side, which gimli and legolas don't seem to use as much, and you can see in his eyes that he means business but his style just doesn't do it for me. Haldir- sorry people but haldir has a lot to learn. His stealth is good and if he was in his native woods hunting orcs he'd be near unbeatable but put him somewhere like healms deep and you get a very dead elf. He forgot one of the most important things about fighting- don't lose concentration, thats when the enemy can get in. He also turned his back on a live opponent. Not a good thing to do! Sam, merry and pippin- Very good for people who have no training! Using pots pans and stones as weapons when you have nothing else is good, especialy if you have little experiance in that sort of thing. They get all the credit they deserve, just for surviving battles. Frodo- pathetic. But then again, he's supposed to be so you feel sorry for him. That hobbit should have paid attention to Boromir's training! Boromir- Like Aragorn, no finese but he makes up for it with his strength. If I was half as strong as he is, I'd be one happy balrog! Eowyn- Not to bad actually! She has very good awareness and her intent is good, Very assertive, can't wait to see her in a proper battle! I like her style too, like most weaker people she relies on style and technique (which she rocks at ) rather than strengh Eomer- You didn't see to much of him off a horse so I can't really tell too much. He seems to be like aragorn and boromir, but I'd like to see him fight off a horse. Gandalf- very good for someone that old! His sword works a bit haphazard and any skilled enemy could probably get through his defences, just as well he has magic to back up his sword work. Arwen- Good stealth if she can creep up on a ranger. She can obviously use a sword, I'd like to see her fight (not in the film though! Lol, keep the storyline intact please PJ!) as I think her style would probably be like Eowyn excpet with less fire. Fed up yet?

Ok, I'd like to train using Legoals's daggers. I'm not strong enough to be able to use a bow (yup, I'm a real weakling) We use (plastic or wooden) knives at karate so I'd kind of know what I'm doing a little, a small weapons good for getting close to people which my fighting style involves (lot's of sidesteps-or remies if you want to be technicall- which means with knives you can get in close to do things like slit peoples throats- I've never actually done this, karate's just something I find fun, I actually would hate to be in a real fight) and it would be easier to use than some others weapons. However, it's only long disastance use would be to throw it and then you're weaponless. Either that or I'd like to fight with a staff. We use Bo's at karate which are kind of like staffs, they're good because you can disable someone without killing them and you can use both ends of the staff to attack or block. You also don't have to watch you don't accidently stab yourself with it which is a big advantage if you haven't trained with one for years. However, it's a bit long which means swinging it round can take a long time and gives your enemy a chance to get in. I'd hate to use a swrod or an axe. We use shini's at karate which are bamboo swords. Swinging it takes far to long, an enemy with a dagger or knives could slit your thoat in the time it takes to swing one. Also, metal swords are heavy, while this gives them momentum it also makes fighting slower and harder if you don't have near superhuman stranght and you tire easier. If I had to use a sword, I'd want to use a foil like you use for fencing (except a bit sharper obviosly) as they're light, and you can parry and thrust with them a lot easier than a big broadsword. Ok, something I missed out earlier, The bit in TTT where they're all fighting weaponless. It was shocking! For a start, their roundhouse punches had quite a bit of momentum but they need to learn that you should always punch from the hip. If you swing then you waste valuable time and you also make it so easy for people to block you. To punch properly you should do the following. - Relax, stand with your feet shoulder width apart to start off with. Make sure your shoulders are completly relaxed. Make your hands into fists, making sure your thumbs are on the outside. If they're on the inside, as soon as you punch someone you'll break your thumb. The back of your hand should be facing downwards and the side of your hand with your thumb should be facing upwards.
- Throw your right hand out to shoulderheight. Your hand should be in the middle of your body not going off to one side. Your arm should be straight but don't lock your elbow. When you threw your arm out, you should have turned your hand so your palm is now facing downwards
- Practise this until you can do it smothly and with some power behind it.
Now we just need to get the three hunters to read that! Next, Legolas was a complete disapointment at this. He completly lost the fluent style that I admire so much, his punches were jerky and unconvincing. I can punch better than him and I'm famous for my bad punchs! Also his back fist where he stays looking forward and knocks out the person behind him? Good awareness but his technique is shocking. He let the person pretty much walk into his hand, to do this without his arm moving he would have had to have tense shoulders. This completly restricts his movements! You shoudl never do that! Instead of hitting with his hand which is comparitvly weak, he should have used his elbow and hit the guy in the throat. Then he wouldn't be getting back up in a hurry. Improvements? Apart from the weaponless githing which was apaling, each of the charector's flaws in their fighting is part of thier charecteristic. Elves are flowing and smooth but too rehearsed, men are strong and powerfull but have little finesse. If they were all perfect it would be completly unbelievable and I'd be complaining a lot more!

that wasn't boring or too long Eloise! I found it VERY interesting. I would like to fight with two knives or a sword. With bow you have to stand back from the enemy to fire and if you missed they might kill you by the time you fired again. With swords you can block the blow and you have a lot more power. It seems like it would be harder to block with knives, but since they are so cool, they would be my second choice after sword. I like Boromir's style of fighting because he has a lot of power and is very strong. Swords are my favorite kind of weapons to watch in a fight.

I used to be able to hit a fast moving target (generally my brother) with an arrow fired from a homemade bow (made of bamboo from our garden). We had a strict rule of aiming below the waist (meaning that even a stray shot was unlikely to hit above the shoulder), but in the heat of battle, rules sometimes got forgotten. It's a miracle we all survived with both eyes! It was fun though, and I was pretty accurate. My bows tended to have a good range and packed quite a punch, although the arrows were blunt bamboo. I've always wanted to try with a real bow(but a proper one, not the composite type).

Staff fighting is fun. It hurts when you get hit, but you soon get very good at not getting hit. We used to use broom handles. We also used them as swords. Great fun!

Oh, I did this stuff with a drama/dance group once. We got sorted into Elves, Men, Hobbits and Orcs and we learnt fighting styles. OK, no weapons involved, but I learnt some cool stuff, sword skills, how do die when you're shot with and arrow etc. It was great fun !

my brother and I fought like that once Hathawyn! It was fun! Except that he is stronger than me so I got the worst of the fight My brother was stronger too, but I was quicker and sneakier. He hit me hard on the head once and I staggered around until he felt guilty. Aren't I evil? My sister and I showed no mercy to each other. We were very well matched. Neneithel
