Called To Greatness
Chapter 1: The Shadow Amongst Us
Mirdan leapt down from the tall tree in which he was keeping his watch from.
“What did you see?” said Vladmir.
“The woods to the north are darker than they were the day before. And not just any darkness..an evil darkness.” Mirdan answered.
“Evil darkness? Please, Mirdan..your going to make me fall over.” Vladimir looked at him teasingly
“You forget Vladmir, Sauron’s shadow is gone. Those forests should be as green as any other part of Mirkwood.”
Mirdan was right, but Vladimir knew Mirdan was always superstitious and adventurous. If Vladimir didn't know any better he'd think Mirdan wanted it to be some dark force.
“It’s probably nothing, besides the mountains could be shadowing them.” Vladimir reasoned with Mirdan.
“But look where the sun is,” Mirdan pointed nearly straight up, ”If there is any shadow it should be behind the mountain and not a very big one at that.”
Vladmir shrugged and suddenly began running South to the elven outpost that these to elven lookouts stayed in. There were also a few elven families. Lookouts' spouses and children.
It was usual for Mirdan and Vladmir to race to their outpost, but Vladmir had caught him off guard this time. “Come on!” yelled Vladmir. Mirdan began to catch up to him when suddenly there was a high pitched sound and Vladmir’s body fell lifelessly to the ground. Mirdan stopped and held him. Knowing there attacker was probably at some high point so he could see well Mirdan quickly pulled his friend's body from site, tears trickling from his face. Mirdan looked at the wound, the arrow had hit him in his right rib cage. ”Stay with me mellon” he whispered quietly, but it was too late. Vladimir was killed almost at the instand he was hit. Mirdan moved South slowly. He stopped behind a tree and wiped the tears from his eyes.
He lay flat on the ground crawling ever so slowly until he could see the orc archer that had felled his friend, Mirdan snuck up behind it and slit it's throat with pleasure. Suddenly a large horn rang out and marching feet could be heard coming from the North.
Mirdan climbed a tree to stay out of site. When the orcs came into view, which was still far away because the elf had excellent seeing, his eyes widened in terror, "H-How?" was all that could escape him. Regaining his wits he took some of the thick paper given to him and his quill pen out of a pocket on the side of his tunic. He was a scout after all, and needed these things to be an effective one. On the paper he wrote,
Elves at this outpost,
There is a shadow amongst us. A great orc army comes your way. I will go to Moria and ask for reinforcements from the Dwarves. Flee or Stand your choice it remains. However, I advise you. Flee while there is time, or atleast evacuate those who can not fight.
Your scout,
Mirdan
Mirdan then folded the letter, stuck it in a opening in the hollow shaft of the arrow and launched it up over the trees in the direction of his outpost. He jumped from the tree and began running. He knew his next destination, the Misty Mountains. Some evil had awoken in the dark. Some evil had been watching, and it came from the North.
