Smoking makes you smell bad... ruins your teeth... and countless other nasty things... lung cancer not the least of these!

You know what I find funny? That when Dom would smoke pipeweed while filming LotR he had to have a glass of milk after smoking it because he just couldn't stand the smell and it itched it or something. Funny stuff. But I don't think them smoking changes my opinion about them. It's their lives. But I wish they wouldn't. I don't smoke, I hate smoke. I think that they really want to quit but can't. At a party, I met a friend of my aunt's with whom I talked with all the night and she would smoke every now and then and she would tell me not to smoke ever, that it is very bad, that she herself was trying to stop it but was addicted to it. Maybe it's a nervous thing?

See, I dont smoke, and I never will. When I was younger I probably would have though.
I think EW was trying to stop though, so that's good(better than trying to look "cool" while slowly killing yourself)and I just respect that the people who didn't smoke and said they never will don't smoke.
Be a hero, don't smoke, and tell your kids not to!

i only did it a few tiems then told myself to quit being stupid. so i stopped. it was really easy for me. i jsut told the girl i got them from not to let me get anymore and she was kinda like "ooook...." i didn't get addicted. i didn't do it enough. so yea, i kick myself at least once a day for doing it. but that is behind me. i think it was a good experience thingy tho...Cos I was able to tell myself to stop. So I consider that sort of an acomplishment....I know, I'm such a numbskull.

Well, it's their lives...Of course smoking is not a clever thing to do, but we humans do a lot of other stupid things, too...

I hate smoking. I hold my breath when I'm walking by people smoking on the street. But some of my best friends smoke. It's they're own lives, they're own choices. Sure, I'm a little put off by it, but I wouldn't want to think less of a person because of it...

I smoked for 27 years.
Isn't it so silly to have a definition of the word 'cool' that involves doing something so utterly stupid?
Now my oldest son smokes. He was the one who used to get so upset with me because I smoked.
I have many mixed opinions on the matter concerning the actors who smoke. One of those things is that as far as I am concerned, being that they are in the spotlight and their fans look up to them, they have an obligation to those fans, and their smoking can cause young people who want to be like them, or admire them, to smoke too. My son looked up to me as a little boy, and now as a grown person, he smokes.
Interestingly enough, being anywhere near smoke makes me ill now. Though I have empathy for those still caught in the addiction, I think the smell is worse to those who once smoked, though I don't know why.

My mum smokes and my dad died when he was 43 so smoking may have caused it. So i'm against smoking but i don't think any less of people who smoke only people whoa re underage and try it for fun. most smokers are addicted so they can't hlp it.

Well, one of my exfriends started doing it, and he's being a jerk, so I don't want to talk to him.

In my opinion, people have the right to smoke if they wish. I absolutely hate the smell of cigarette smoke, but I do not have the right to force someone to stop something. As long as they do not tell young kids/teens that it is cool or safe to smoke, I think they ahve the right to smoke even though it is a bit disappointing #noedit

OK, a question for you all about the actors. A lot of them smoke (Elijah, Viggo, Liv until 2002 etc.). My question is does it put you off them? Post answers here. Well, to each their own I say. I personally don't smoke though I did once upon a time., but I will not say that anyone cannot smoke. If a bar or restaurant allows smoking it usually says that at the entrance, and I as a non smoker go in knowing this. It is not my right to complain about it. Also, if a bar or restaurant is a non smoking establishment, then smokers should not light up inside, or near the entrance outside for that matter. Its called common courtesy on both sides of the issue. On actors smoking in movies and tv shows... again, its more realistic to see a smoker smoke on screen than a non smoker in the role. I liked the fact that Gandalf, Aragorn, and the Hobbits were smoking their pipes onscreen. I don't like it when the actors are not allowed to smoke on screen. A TV show a few years back called the Pretender had Miss Parker smoking onscreen a few seasons, then she wasn't. They said it wasn't allow3ed anymore. Well it did make her character more pregnant dogy which she was in that show anyway, but still, I don't care for the politically correctness creeping into movies.

I know several of the actors have stopped smoking. Last I knew, Orly had stopped and EW was trying to stop. Personally, I think smoking is a really dumb thing to do. Especially when your craft has to do with your voice. Has anyone else noticed that, when someone smokes long enough, their voice gets scratchy sounding? One would think that actors would find this reason enough to not smoke. And, if they also sing, which I know some of the LOTR cast does, smoking is incredibly bad for your voice.
The fact that they smoke is not enough to make me not like them, but it does drop them a point or two on my scale of people who I highly admire.

Has anyone else noticed that, when someone smokes long enough, their voice gets scratchy sounding? You're totally right about that. I sing in this band-playing project, and our bass guitarist smokes. And when he smokes on stage, I always have a lot of trouble with my voice. (sorry, that was a bit off-topic)

Yes, smoking is dumb, and I don't understand how anybody affords it. When I used to smoke, it was about 50¢ a pack. Now its about $5 a pack. Its good to hear people quitting, but it is a drug addiction and you never really 'quit'. You are constantly 'quitting' because I have known people who had quit for 20 years but then suddenly start up again. The best advice is don't ever start.
